Driven into the Blue
late one day in may
beneath the ocean sky
I wiped the sleep from
my eyes
like an old lighthouse I stood
strong as mortar and wood
in awe of my attention to disguise
and seeing you standing in the blue
kicking stones by the old breakwater wall
I laughed at you, playing
silent, too
I laughed at the irony
of it all
I laughed as I watched the
curtain fall
hasta luego, my friend
see you again someday
if the fates are willing
I broke into a sprint
down the carnival boulevard
through wintergreen lawns and rusty steel backyards
your car was a silhouette
vanishing over the inlet
an obsolescent vision dying hard
and seeing you drive into the blue
like iscariot
I felt no longer blessed
seeing you drive away into the blue
your epiphany, I guess
at my back I heard the thunder
in my bones I knew the quest
of defeat gone unaddressed
but seeing you drive into the blue
I knew you could go no
further west
it was your epiphany, I guess
